How-to

A how-to or a how to is an informal, often short, description of how to accomplish some specific task. A how-to is generally meant to help non-experts, may leave out details that are only important to experts, and may also be greatly simplified from an overall discussion of the topic. See procedural knowledge for a discussion of what sort of knowledge is imparted, and how far it can be imparted, in how-tos.

How to crochet a ponytail holder

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • crochet hook suitable to yarn size
  • your choice of yarn, ribbon or any other crochetable stringy stuff :)
  • ponytail holders without metal connectors (I use Goody brand ouchless)
Step1
Slip loop onto hook. Cast onto purchased ponytail holder (base) and chain two or three... depending on if you want to continue with double or triple crochet.
Step2
Chain an additional three to five stitches. The further away from your base the edge will be, the more you want to chain between each grounding stitch.
Step3
Wrap and *either double or triple crochet onto base, chain same number as in step two * Repeat until base is loosely filled and you have a good ruffle going (I usually do 18-20 tc's on a large base for each round.)
Step4
Double or triple in the space between your cast-on stitch and second stitch. Continue as in step 3, placing a stitch between each one in the first go-round until...
Step5
...either finishing here (see step 6) or go around again, placing each base stitch every three spaces. Your ponytail holder should be nice and fluffy, now!
Step6
To finish: cut yarn and pull through last loop. Find starter tail, then tie it with end tail in at least a square knot (left-over-right then right-over-left) then trim tails. Give the holder a couple of stretches to distribute the stitches evenly and you're done!
